Adult Basic and Secondary Education

Adult Basic Education programs offer adults a way to improve and advance their reading, writing, and math skills to the high school level before studying for a high school diploma or preparing for the GED/HiSet tests.

Earning a high school diploma or high school equivalency such as GED or HISET can make a real difference in adult learners’ future. A diploma shows that students have learned the basic skills and knowledge included in a high school education and provides access to postsecondary training programs or the workforce.

One of four SBCAE Faculty Work Groups, the ABE/ASE Faculty Work Group advances the implementation of the Three Year and Annual Plan, as it relates to Basic Skills or High School Diploma/Equivalency Programs.

Current Year Activities, aligned with project 3 in the 2020-2021 work plan include:

  • Advancing the implementation of SB554 (Dual Enrollment)
  • Inventory basic skills and high school diploma/equivalency programs offered by SBCAE members
  • Develop strategies to increase ABE/ASE students’ transition to postsecondary pathways
  • Act as liaison with other ABE/ASE providers in our community, through participation in the Opportunity Youth Partnership network
